Ice Skating Rink

The Shorewood Hills skating rink and Heiden Haus warming house are located on the south end of the Shorewood Hills Elementary School grounds each winter (weather permitting).

The Heiden Haus (dedicated to Olympians, and former Village residents, Eric and Beth Heiden) is open until 10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday and until 11:00 pm on Friday & Saturday. The rink is lighted for nighttime use. An enclosed hockey rink is set up next to an open skating area. Hockey is not permitted in the open skating area.

We use a color-coded flag system, with the flag hanging on the west end of the Heiden Haus as well as lights on the eaves of the Heiden Haus that match the color of the flag for better visibility.

  • RED = Rink is closed. Please keep off the ice during these times to keep the rink in good condition for as long as possible.
  • GREEN = Rink is open for skating.

The rink is maintained by the Village’s Public Works Crew. It takes several consecutive cold days for the ground to freeze before ice can be made. The rink is flooded late at night and during the weekday mornings as needed. It takes several hours for the ice to become solid enough for skating. Please respect the closures. Walking or skating on the rinks when the red flag is up can seriously damage the ice. Holes, snow chunks, and broken ice can create safety hazards and may force us to shut the rinks down.
